Christianity in a Nutshell

If you've never really understood how Christianity works, let me try to explain.
God is love he created Man in his own image, so Man could be in a loving relationship with him. (Man here means everyone, men and women, God made all people from the first man).

Next

Because God is Man's creator and owner he has the right to make the rules (today if you create music or software you can set the rules about how others use it). God is holy (holy means pure) so he asked that Man remained pure too. God is also just (that means he is fair) he rewards those who do what it right and punishes those who break the law (a human judge who lets guilty people go is corrupt).

Next

Though Man was created in God's image he disobeyed God and became impure, because we are all descended from the first man, we also disobey God and are impure.

We can do a quick test to see if that is true:

  1. Have you ever told a lie?
This includes white lies, fibs and cheating, try again!
    yes / no
    Yes
  2. Have you ever stolen anything?
You just told me you were a liar how am I meant to believe you? This includes small items pens, sweets and music copied illegally. Try again!
    Yes
  3. Have you ever used your eyes to look with lust (Jesus said, lust in the eyes, is adulatory in the heart)?
    Be honest. Try again!
    yes / no
    Yes
If you have said yes to these three questions then by your own admission you are a liar, a thief and an adulterer at heart (and that is only looking at three of the ten commandments). If you were judged by this standard on judgement day would you be innocent or guilty?

Try again!
The bible says all people fall short of God's standard. Man is helpless in this state, no amount of doing good will make up for the wrong he has done. If a doctor murders his wife on Monday, but saves a life on Tuesday, he would still be guilty of murder in a court of law. When it comes to justice good and evil don't cancel each other out, God's is perfect and his standard is perfection. The bible says man is destined to die once and after that to face judgment.

We said earlier that God loves people but must punish all disobedience. Heaven is a perfect place so anything imperfect can never enter. Death entered the world to put an end to everything imperfect (life has now become a struggle to survive). God knew that if Man entered his presence, he would have to put an end to his life. God's goodness demands he puts an end to evil. As soon as a policeman catches a criminal the criminal must be charged. The bible says God wants none to perish. To prevent this happening straight away, God broke off the relationship with Man and a chasm opened up between them. God was angry with Man and Man was angry with God. Man was left facing death all alone.

However God still loved Man (when parents get angry with their children it does not mean they don't still love them). God sent his only Son Jesus to Earth to become a man. Jesus emptied himself of his own power and authority and became one of us. Except that because he was born through a virgin he did not inherit Man's rebellious nature.

God made everything, so there is no way humans can fit God inside their minds (as concept). It would be like an ant trying to understand a human. In Jesus God became a man taking on human limitations and talking in human terms. Man could now know exactly what God was like. Man would also see how God had wanted Man to live.

Next

This made Man very, very, angry, specialy since Man had become very relegious, making up his own rules to try and make his own way back to God. So Man mocked him, called him an imposter and shouted for his execution. Man forced Jesus outside the city walls and spat at him (this is where many still want Jesus today).

Jesus was fully God and fully Man, because of this he is able to represent God to Man and Man to God (he became a bridge for reconciliation). Though Jesus had no sin of his own to die for, he took on himself the wrongdoing of the world. Jesus was then punished for our sin in our place. He took the blame before God for the wrong things that we have done. In God's court of law human sin demanded human blood. On the cross Jesus willingly offered his blood instead of ours. If we died for our sin we would remain in hell forever. God made Man in his own image, because God is eternal, our souls are eternal too. No amount of punishment would ever make us perfect enough for heaven. But because Jesus had never sinned he was able to rise from the dead after he had payed the price for our rebellion.

Next

Because all sin entered the world through one man (Adam) it is also able to leave the world through one man (Jesus Christ). Jesus lived a perfect life. Just as the first man transmitted his bad name and rebellious behaviour to all his descendants. Jesus is also able to transmit his good name and obedient nature to those willing to receive it. But we have to choose to become God's children (this is what the phrase 'born again' really means). God does not force us to take this step, he respects our freewill and offers us forgiveness and new life as a free gift. Taking this step means giving God permission to change everything on the inside, to make you fit for heaven.

If deep down you want everything to remain pretty much the same in your life, don't take this step. Jesus made it very clear, this is an all or nothing decision. Throughout history many of Jesus' followers have been told to deny Jesus or face execution. The bible says there will be no place for cowards in heaven. God will give you courage, he will also help you to make every change needed, but you need to be willing to be changed. God is all-powerful and all-knowing, when you open the door to him I can't be responsible for what he does (he meets with each person in a different way). He promises never to let you go, so think it through carefully first.

Forgiveness is a gift and a gift has to be received to be of any use. This gift is received by faith, that means knowing that if God is real he can hear what you are thinking right now. If you would like to receive forgiveness then God is listening, its time to talk. Say something like this to God:

Dear God, Sorry for the wrong things I've done in my life [name the worst and the rest will follow more easily]. I turn away from all these things, please forgive me and restore me. I forgive those who have hurt me. Thank you that you sent your only Son Jesus whom you love, to die in my place, instead of me. His life was cut short for my purposes, I give the rest of my life for his purpose. Please give me your Holy Spirit to seal this decision and keep me walking it out until the day I die.

Amen

The most famous verse in the bible says God loves the world so much that he gave his one and only son so that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. The bible also says that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord (that is God) and belive in your heart he has been raised from the dead then you are saved. It is therefore a good idea if you tell others about the decision you have made. If you want you can tell me using the form below but be sure to tell some people you know personally.
